Big Bay, Big Bite!

Saginaw Bay proved to be a blast this past weekend! Our destination of choice found us to be over 9 miles out from our vehicles and it was a great location. We set up in 28 feet of water fishing a clay bar. The morning started with the suggestion to use larger profile lures but after a few fish were landed on our smaller set ups we knew downsizing was going to be the key to success. The first few perch we caught were gorged on blood worms and other small larvae. The size 4 tungsten in a Bloody Nose worked well jigging and as a dead stick. A slower and more controlled jigging action seemed to trigger strikes that proved effective on both walleye and jumbo perch. The size 3 Blue Shad Yukon shiner tipped with a minnow head was effective in catching jumbo perch. If you get a chance, give the Big Bay a try. However, before you hit the ice be sure to check with the locals for ice conditions. The bay can be great fishing but it can also be tricky navigating.
