Time to Turn the Page

With one of the oddest winters we’ve seen in some time winding down, it’s time to start tuning the page and focusing on spring fishing. While there is still time to get out and hit the ice, its always fun to look ahead to warm spring days. The thoughts of catching big bluegills, crappies and other panfish on warm sunny days never gets old. And right now is a great time to get a jump start on your spring fishing. Get out your rods & reels, tackle, and anything else you may use to make your trip a successful one.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is make sure your favorite combo’s are in good working condition. And probably for most of you that will include putting new line on these old favorites. One “HOT TIP” that you may want to try if you spool up with monofilament line and have problems with snarls and tangles. After spooling up with new line, run the spool/reel of line under warm to hot water for ten seconds or so. While you’re doing this keep rotating the reel so the water isn’t just hitting the same spot all of the time. Anglers I have spoken with say’s this really makes a difference in removing the memory out of their line and greatly reduces snarls.

Next and probably the most fun is going through the tackle box and taking inventory of what you have. And of course you always need more….. The one thing I like to do to begin each season is to try something new. This could be a new technique, new lure or something else. And keep in mind, you can have a ton of fun experimenting and making your own favorite way to catch panfish. Don’t get cornered into thinking there is just one good way of catching spring panfish. Trying something new can be a ton of fun and very rewarding, especially at the dinner table! So what are you waiting for, let’s start turning the page on winter and start getting ready for spring.
